How Jack Nicklaus Initiates the Downswing

This is an excerpt from the book, GOLF MY WAY, by Jack Nicklaus, published in 1974. It is one of the first and best attempts to explain how to properly start the club down after making a correct backswing. This is where most of the problems lie for the higher handicap golfers. If you can master this, you can move into a single digit handicap. See Jack's swing.

Playing FUGOS

FUGOS is a golf game designed to reward the player that makes good shots. Winning a hole with a 7 against your golf opponents is not good golf. It is poor golf on your part and on the part of those who have more than a 7 on a hole. A player should be rewarded if they;

  • Hit a fairway in regulation (F)
  • Get an up and down (U)
  • Hit the green in regulation (G)
  • Make a one putt (O)
  • Win the hole outright with net par or better, ie.. get a skin (S)

    It is easy to keep track of FUGOS by putting a dot in each corner of the score card hole box and circle the score for a skin (see "Keeping Score" in rules). However, all players must agree to some simple rules that define an up and down, chip-in, and other conditions that can arise.

    Here are the FUGO Rules. Modify as you see fit. This is all for fun and hopefully it will make us better golfers, because we are being paid for performance on the course. Handicapping a FUGO game has not been worked out yet, so try to play with golfers that are approximately the same skill level as yourself. A 19 playing a 5, for FUGOS would not be fair.

    For those that are interested, prior to our invention of this golf game, a FUGO was a Japanese balloon bomb used in WWII. read more.....

    Conservative Political Commentary

    The election year, 2008, caused a few folks to express their opinions, to say the least. This is a collection of some of the more out spoken articles that started flowing across the Internet before and after the election. These are not written by anyone from Debary. They are interesting and highly opinionated, not fair and balanced. They are here for your reading pleasure only. In no way, do these represent the views or opinions of Debary Golf and Country Club.
